The old man reached the river and couldn’t walk any farther. He bargained with the river, but he could not cross because although he was a very old man, the river was older by a thousand thousand years. The smooth water smelled of ancient rust and the mold of watery winters. The old man set up a tent on the edge of the river and prayed that he would soon cross. That night he slept in his creation, next to the corpses of the rest.
